Greatest benefit of executive functioning coaching is the long-term benefit.

Executive Functioning Coaching is a type of support that is specifically designed to help children build the critical life skills they need to better navigate school, tasks, and life. While many parents are concerned with tutoring their children in specific subjects to help them get better grades, executive functioning coaching is aimed at something much deeper – the skills that make learning and independence possible.

Executive functioning is a term that refers to a group of mental skills that include things such as organization, time management, planning, task initiation, self-regulation, and self-monitoring. These skills are like the “management system” of the brain. When these skills are strong, children are able to plan, stay on track, get their work done on time, and deal with their frustrations. When these skills are weak, even very smart and capable children can struggle in school and in life.

Children who would benefit from executive functioning coaching are often not struggling because they are not smart or trying hard enough. In fact, they often hear comments such as, “You’re so smart, but you don’t apply yourself,” or “You just need to try harder.”

The truth is that trying harder doesn’t necessarily mean improving executive functioning skills. These skills need to be taught, practiced, and reinforced, and this is where coaching comes into play.

Executive functioning coaching is highly individualized. Learn more to understand  how a coach will work one-on-one with a child to identify what is specifically challenging for them. Perhaps the child forgets to record homework assignments, underestimates the time required for a task, puts off assignments until the last minute, or gets overwhelmed by multi-step instructions. Rather than just reminding the child of what they need to do, a coach will teach the child systems and strategies. This might involve making a visual planner, breaking down assignments into manageable chunks, estimating realistic timelines, and developing routines that decrease stress.

One of the most important aspects of executive functioning coaching is that it fosters independence. Rather than relying on parents and teachers for constant reminders and structure, children learn to take control of their own responsibilities. They learn to prioritize, filter out distractions, and think critically about what works best for them. Over time, they shift from being reactive to proactive.

Emotional regulation is another skill where coaching is beneficial. Many children with executive functioning deficits also have frustration, anxiety, or low self-esteem. When faced with too much to do, emotions can quickly get out of control. The coach will assist the child in recognizing the emotions and learning strategies to control them. This may include learning strategies to calm down, change negative thoughts, or solve problems. As children learn to control their emotions, their self-confidence increases automatically.

Executive functioning coaching can be particularly beneficial for children with ADHD, learning issues, or high levels of stress. But it is not just for these children. Any child who has difficulty with organization, time management, or follow-through can benefit. These are skills that will be used throughout life.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of executive functioning coaching is the long-term benefit. Tutoring may help a particular subject, but executive functioning coaching will improve the underlying foundation that supports all subjects and all responsibilities. It will give children the skills to use throughout their educational years and into their adult life. In simple terms, executive functioning coaching helps kids learn how to learn. It empowers them to become organized, resilient, and confident individuals who can navigate challenges with greater independence and success.
